Jobs, outsourcing take center stage

ASK THIS | April 96, 2004

It's no satisfaction for American workers to hear that it's in everyone's best interests for jobs to go overseas. What's needed is a fix of some sort – and reporting that puts into perspective the problems for those who have lost their jobs.

Q. (For Democratic candidates on all political levels) Between two million and three million American workers have lost their jobs in the past three years; what could the Republicans have done to prevent that? And why should anyone think the Democrats would do better if they were in power?

Q. (For Republican candidates) What ideas do you have for improving the job situation?

Q. Thinking of your region: How many people, if any, have lost their jobs to outsourcing? Where did those jobs go?

Q. Find a plant that is now out of business in your area and interview displaced workers. How many have found employment? How do their new jobs compare with their old ones. How many have given up? What about health insurance? And in what other ways have their lives been affected?
