Recalling Pulitzer on our first birthday

SHOWCASE

—Recalling Joseph Pulitzer on our first birthday—

May 24th marked our first anniversary online. We take the occasion to recall the words of Joseph Pulitzer in the North American Review of May 1904:

“Our Republic and its press will rise or fall together. An able, disinterested, public-spirited press, with trained intelligence to know the right and courage to do it, can preserve that public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery. A cynical, mercenary, demagogic press will produce in time a people as base as itself. The power to mould the future of the Republic will be in the hands of the journalists of future generations.”

—These inspirational words of Pulitzer are to be found on a plaque at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

Does anyone read that plaque?

There are signs that the American press is finding the courage to challenge the present administration; however, I suggest that the White House press corps be reminded of these words each and every time they shuffle in to Bush administration press conferences. Maybe they could take turns holding up a poster replica of the Pulitzer plaque at the entrances...and at the exits too, just to make sure they remember.
